Ecuador y la “muerte cruzada”: entre la amenaza y la posibilidad

En medio de una profunda crisis política, ell presidente Guillermo Lasso ha anunciado la disolución de la Asamblea Nacional para evitar su posible destitución por acusaciones de malversación de fondos. Esta medida, conocida como “muerte cruzada”, permite al presidente disolver el congreso una sola vez durante su mandato y convocar elecciones presidenciales y legislativas anticipadas dentro de seis meses. Las elecciones están programadas para el 20 de agosto, para cumplir solamente lo que resta del periodo de Lasso, es decir hasta 2025.

On Jan. 21, the Health Ministry of the new government of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva declared a medical emergency in Yanomami Indigenous territory deep in the Amazon rainforest  that for years has been invaded by illegal miners and loggers, and more recently, organized crime.

Después de haber logrado la suspensión del proyecto de minería Progreso VII Derivada, La Resistencia Pacífica La Puya enfrenta una demanda por más de 400 millones de dólares de la empresa minera, Kappes, Cassiday y Asociados, con sede en Nevada, EEUU, contra el Estado de Guatemala. El arbitraje se lleva a cabo en un tribunal del Banco Mundial que permite que empresas extranjeras demanden a gobiernos como represalia contra la legítima defensa de su territorio y bienes por parte de las comunidades afectadas y las leyes nacionales.

The images of the January 8 violent attacks against the governmental buildings in Brasília spread through international media and are still resounding today. Wearing the colors of the national flag and the beloved Brazilian football team, the mob of supporters of former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, stormed and vandalized the Federal Supreme Court, the National Congress’s building and the Planalto Presidential Palace, institutions that compose the Three Powers Plaza.
