On Sept. 17, several dozen protesters occupied a small park near Wall Street in the financial district of New York City. This symbolic protest against massive economic inequality, corruption and the systemic failings of finance capital quickly blossomed into a national direct-action movement. Parks and plazas throughout most major U.S. cities soon were occupied. Protesters camped out, engaging in direct democracy and employing general assemblies for making decisions. Despite a wave of government evictions, coordinated actions across the country continue to bring issues of inequality and injustice under the current economic system to the fore of national debate and discussion.

In this Americas Program slide show, reknowned photojournalist David Bacon gives us an intimate look at some of the West Coast occupations and their local struggles.
